Creation of the Staggered Stripes Afghan pattern
Our desire to create different designs comes from all places. The design for the Staggered Stripes Afghan came about because I wanted to make an afghan for someone in my life. I wasn’t 100% on his favorite colors but I knew his favorite teams. So using the colors from the college team he favored I began designing.

I wanted to work in panels, so I started drawing it out on graph paper. It took a couple of drafts to find something that I was happy with. And then came the color layout, I tried a couple of different ways before I found the right color pattern. The staggered stripes afghan was born.
Once I had the colors and pattern together, I needed to come up with the stitch for the pattern. I looked through my stitch pattern book and played around with a couple before I settled on the rope stitch. The stitch was slightly open but with the yarn I used, it was still a very warm blanket.
I decided to use Caron One Pound yarn for the value in the amount of yarn that you get. It is an ideal choice for afghans and other large projects. My full review of the yarn can be read here.
Staggered Stripes Afghan Pattern
This pattern is worked in panels and you can start with any panel that you would like to. I made the 2 outside panels first as they were the same.
Panel 1 & 5
Start with color A
CH 30
Row 1 – DC in 4th chain from the end, ch 1, DC in same space, skip next stitch, DC in next chain, ch 1, DC in the same stitch. Repeat across to the end. DC in the last stitch. Ch 2, turn.
Row 2 – DC in chain space, ch 1, DC in the same chain space. Repeat across to the last stitch, DC in the last stitch.
Repeat row 2 in color A for rows 3-12
Color B rows 13-24
Color C rows 25-27
Color A rows 28-36
Color C rows 37-39
Color B rows 40-51
Color A rows 52-63
Color B rows 64-75
Color A rows 76-87
Color C rows 88-90
Color B rows 91-99
Color C rows 100-102
Color A rows 103-114
Color B rows 115-126, finish off
Panel 3
Start with color B
CH 30

Staggered Stripes Afghan Assembly
Pin panels 1 and 2 together ensuring that the colors line up according to the graph and use the mattress stitch to connect them securely.
Add panel 3 to panel to and sew with the mattress stitch. Ensure that the colors continue to match the graph.
Add panels 4 and 5 in the same manner
Border
In my original design, it ended up being wider than I intended, as a result I added panels at each end continuing with the stripe pattern. You will see these in the pictures in this post. Because of this, I made the panels slightly narrower in the write-up of the pattern, so that the added panels should not be necessary.
The border was a simple HDC which is worked around the outside with color B and then color A. Take care to not stretch the stitches too much to prevent rippling.
Connect in the top corner with B, HDC across, 3 in the corner, and proceed down the side. 3 in the next corner and then across the bottom, 3 in the next corner, and up the last side. 3 in the corner and slip stitch to connect to the start of the border. Connect with color A and repeat around. Finish off.

I used either an H 5.0mm or I 5.5mm, I don’t remember exactly but both work with the Caron yarn that I used in the pattern. The panels are about 12in wide, the blanket laid just over the edges of a queen size bed once assembled. It is approximately 5.5 ft x 7 ft. This is an estimate from pictures that I have, the blanket was a gift and I no longer have access to it. I hope you enjoy the project.
