The story behind the Mandala yarn project

I have been intrigued by the Mandala yarn since I first saw it in Walmart. The color combinations that are available are amazing. Some really pull me in and others are not my cup of tea but they offer something for everyone. While I had my eye on the yarn for quite some time it was a while before I got some or sat down and used it. My yarn stash still has some in it. 🙂

I finally decided that it was time to start working on a project with the yarn. I had this project in my head for one of the color schemes that I had in my stash. This particular one was one that I had received as a gift. I bought two more when they went on clearance and then the idea for the project building in my head. All of the names are mythical in nature including Phoenix, Dragon, Unicorn, and Troll. The colorway, Serpent, is what I used for my first project with Mandala yarn.

I’ve seen many times on Pinterest the cocoon sweater in a granny square stitch. That was going to be what I make with this first colorway of Mandala yarn. I didn’t follow anyone’s pattern just started working it on my own wanting to design it unique to Becca Jean’s World. I did refer to different ones on sizing but that was all.

Finally, I finished it, having paused on it for a baby shower gift that was also done in Mandala yarn but that pattern was done with Mandala baby.

Mandala Yarn Review

Overall, I liked using the Mandala yarn. It is interesting how the colors change. As I went through the various cakes that I used I could predict when the color was changing. There are slight color changes that occur before the drastic change from yellow to green or grey to black.

I did find a couple of knots mid-cake with is always annoying but it was not a consistent issue. While crocheting I always pull from the middle, it was how I learned. I read somewhere that cakes should be unwound from the outside and tried this method for this project. Not having a yarn bowl or other device to feed the yarn from I did a lot of pulling the yarn off which helped my step count a few times lol. In a number of yarn cakes, I couldn’t find the end in the middle to save my life.

One thing that I discovered with the random buying of the serpent colorway is that with Mandala yarn is it essential to buy with the same lots or at least to match the stripping as close as possible. I had one cake that started with green and one that started with yellow so the stripping is very random and not consistent with the first use. With the last one, I needed to actually start in the middle of the cake so that the stripes went in the same order.

When I purchased the yarn for the baby blanket, I pulled it all off the shelf to find the three closest to the same start colors and lot numbers. I also took pictures of what I had at home when I needed to get more because I hadn’t bought enough.
