Red Heart Super Saver Ombre: Yarn review

The Story

The colors of Red Heart Super Saver Ombre in Jazzy called out to me for my recent design “Cancer Ribbon Afghan“. With varying shades of pink, it was exactly what right for the afghan. The design for this afghan is for my aunt who has been diagnosed with breast cancer for a second time.

The colors gradually change from pastel pink to medium pink to hot pink.

Yarn Stats: 100% acrylic, #4 worsted weight or medium weight, 10oz a skein. Uses a 5.5mm or I-9 hook. Machine wash and dry.

Red Heart Super Saver Ombre is available in stores and online. I have purchased it from both Walmart and Joann’s.

The Review of Red Heart Super Saver Ombre

The yarn is relatively easy to work with. I did run into some issues where it would untwist and I had to be careful to get all 4 strands together in the stitch. Like most Red Heart Super Saver yarns, it does feel a little scratchy but not to the point of discomfort. Occasionally, I would locate a knot in the middle of a skein where it was a light pink tied to medium pink. I do find this annoying as working with knots in the middle of a gift is not fun.

Conversely, it did provide some interesting color contrast in the basketweave section of my pattern. As seen in the middle of the photo above. In the photo, you can also see how the striping varies in size. Depending on the knot from the skein or where I changed to a new skein. Even when I was trying to match it as close as I could with the different skeins I had.

The cost of the yarn is very reasonable in comparison to some other brands. Although I did purchase it when it was on sale at one retailer and with a coupon when I needed more at a different retailer.

Overall I would rate Red Heart Super Saver Ombre yarn 3.5 out of 5. I enjoy the color changing, price and durability that it offers. The knots in the middle of the skein and the untwisting are the downfalls of the yarn.
