About Vel-luxe yarn

Let’s talk about Vel-luxe yarn. The yarn is 100% polyester and is listed as a medium weight yarn. It comes as a cake and is 5.3 oz. It is machine washable and lay flat to dry.

The recommended crochet hook is H-8 (5mm) and for knitting size 7 needles are the recommendation. It is available in 7 colors on the Lion Brand website. Dusty pink, silver, emerald, charcoal, marigold, eggplant and lilac.

I have come across different people using velvet yarns but hadn’t had much interest in using it myself. That is until I was looking for the right color green and yellow to match my daughter’s school colors. I found that with the emerald and marigold. While, I wasn’t looking for the velvet itself but the colors in Vel-luxe were right and the squishiness would be great for the project I had in mind.

I was looking to make an ear warmer and a scarf for my daughter. She saw some things at a craft festival that got her interest and my mom suggested that I make them for her for Christmas.

I wanted to design the pattern myself so once I did that, I was able to get started with the yarn. Find the pattern here.

Review

The beginning was a struggle to get it started. The end of the yarn was falling apart and it was hard to get it started. As it was falling apart it did generate some lint. Once I got away from the end of the yarn, it went more smoothly and was easier to work with. That being said taking out stitches was challenging because of the design of the yarn it would tangle some. And man did I take stitches out a few times while working on the scarf.

While there were some issues with the yarn tangling, it was a squishy, soft yarn that worked up relatively quickly. This yarn is best used for something that doesn’t require a lot of stretching. While it does stretch some, it only goes so far. Some ideal projects would be amigurumi, home decor or similar type items.

While I was able to make my desired projects, it is not a yarn that I would recommend for beginners or detailed projects. Or have the patience of a saint to deal with the difficulties of the tangling and shedding.
