Woven Stitch Ear Warmer

The woven stitch ear warmer came about when my daughter was looking at similar items at a craft festival. My mom suggested that I design one for her for Christmas.

When my mom and daughter were talking about it, my daughter mentioned getting one in her school colors. She was a freshman in college at the time and all about the green and gold.

I was seeing similar items on Instagram so that helped push me towards my design. I had never made one before this design so some research was needed to get started. How to size it, how big to make it and how to tie it together.

I wanted to incorporate both school colors into the design so I needed to take that into account when starting the project. To do so, I decided to have an outlining trim in one color and the body of it in the other color. I chose to do it this way because I also made her a scarf to go along with it.

I found green and yellow yarn in the right shades in Lion Brand Vel-luxe. Super soft and squishy yarn. See my post here on my review of the yarn.

For the first time, I didn’t count the chain links as I started, I went by how long it was in inches. For an adult head, 22″ around is the average measurement. Once your chain is long enough, follow the directions below.

In trim color, chain to the desired length with an even amount of numbers. Using the woven stitch, SC in the 2nd chain from the end, chain 1, SK 1 chain, SC in the next chain, repeat to the end with an SC in the final chain. Turn and chain 1. SK first SC and SC in first chain space. Chain 1, SK sc, ch 1, SC in chain space across to end. Change colors.

In body color, ch 1, sk first sc, *1 sc in ch-1 space, ch 1, sk 1sc, repeat from * to end of row 1 sc in ch-1, turn. Repeat stitch pattern to the desired width. Change to trim color.

Complete 2 more rows of the pattern to finish the head band.

Finishing

To attach the headband together, fold each end in half and put them together so that one is overlapping half of the fold on each side. With a needle and thread sew the ends together taking care to catch all of the stitches and not going too deep to see the stitches on the finished side. Once it is all firmly connected finish off. Turn the headband right side out.
